About

About Me

Hi, I’m Maggie Coulter.  I’m a Professional Certified Coach (PCC) and Trauma-Informed Certified Coach (TICC), specializing in career and leadership coaching for people who have experienced past trauma that may be getting in their way.

My interest in understanding trauma came out of necessity.

For the better part of my adult life, I have worked with therapists to process my trauma.  I was diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in my 20’s, struggled with cancer treatment recovery, panic attacks, suicidal thinking, and agoraphobia through my 30’s, and was diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) in my 40’s (grace and healing are in store for my 50's, and less pressure).  I have learned to live with and manage a chronic pain condition that has persisted for > 15 years.

What I mention above are side effects and symptoms of trauma, of course. I don't share specific details of my trauma publicly (unless it feels completely safe and worthwhile to do so, which is rare).  We can re-traumatize ourselves in the re-telling, and even be further harmed if the receiver of our story is not sufficiently trauma-informed.

As I developed my coaching skills and my understanding of trauma, I began to see myself and other trauma survivors in new ways.  We aren’t just victims, and we don’t need pity.  Rather, we’ve got strengths that would knock most people’s socks off – but their socks aren’t going anywhere until we can recognize those strengths in ourselves first.  Until we can learn how to see ourselves with greater appreciation (and far less shame) than we ever have before.

I’m as ambitious as the next person, and I also value kindness, honesty and integrity above everything.  I can be daring when needed and I seek fun and humour everywhere I can.

If that resonates for you, and you’re looking for career and/or leadership support, then I would be delighted to connect with you.

Before making a career transition to coaching in 2009, I built a successful first career in finance, and held the role of Vice President, Technology in the Capital Markets division of a major Canadian bank.

I allowed my 20-year marriage to end, came out as the queer person I am, moved out of the city I've always known and into a small town that suits my nature better.

I love developing new hobbies like flyfishing, cloudspotting, amateur birding, crafty things, and, of course, pickleball.

A word from Maggie's clients

"I was fortunate enough to participate in Maggie’s leadership coaching program. I can’t tell you how this program has impacted my attitude and focus to becoming the fearless leader that I naturally am. I learned so much more about how my insecurities are growth opportunities to better myself and appreciate who I am. I highly recommend this program to anyone who is interested in becoming the ultimate leader!"

"Initially, I was looking for practical career transition tips. What I got from Maggie was an exploration of skills, abilities and creativity through a process of discovery. Her careful listening punctuated with poignant questions extracted from me what I needed to know. Confidence. Purpose. Wow! Nosce te ipsum. (know thyself)."
